Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) released the following statement after the Supreme Court dismantled the right to abortion care in the United States. This unprecedented ruling will lead to dozens of states eliminating access to legal abortion almost immediately, jeopardizing reproductive freedom for millions of Americans and moving toward a nationwide.

"Today's Supreme Court decision takes away a person's power to make their own personal decisions about their reproductive health, life, and future, and instead gives it to politicians," said Rep. Frankel. "This ruling opens the floodgates not only for states to ban or severely restrict access to affordable, legal abortion, but to undermine rights that give us access to birth control, marriage equality, and more--all while disproportionately harming low-income people and people of color.

This is a setback for human rights of shocking proportions. It goes against the will of the American people, and we will fight back for our rights."

The Supreme Court released a 6-3 decision today on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case brought against the State of Mississippi with the explicit intention of overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Today's decision overturned both cases, undermining access to abortion care which had been protected by Court precedent for 50 years.

Last year, the House passed the Women's Health Protection Act, which Rep. Frankel co-led, to protect abortion access regardless of harmful judicial opinions, like this one. Unfortunately, the Senate has blocked the measure, failing millions of Americans who need access to abortion care in the dozens of states where it will now be illegal.
